Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo presented a Tabua today to the landowners of Namosi as a gesture of reconciliation. During the event, he expressed the government’s apology for the past trauma and disruptions experienced by the landowners due to exploration activities linked to the Namosi Joint Venture project.
Acknowledging the pain and long-lasting impacts that the people of Namosi have faced, Vosarogo emphasized the importance of protecting their land and ensuring safety for future generations. He described the Tabua as a symbol of remorse not just from the current administration, but also on behalf of previous governments.
In his speech, Vosarogo addressed concerns over the postponements of earlier meetings linked to the project and assured the landowners that he was there to listen to their grievances. He reaffirmed that the government is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities moving forward, recognizing the considerable work ahead to rebuild trust and collaboration with the local community.
This meeting is being held at the Namosi Village Hall and includes participants from the iTaukei Lands Trust Board, the Namosi Provincial Council Office, and the Central Division Office.
The sentiment surrounding the current discussions emphasizes community involvement in decisions affecting their land. This reflects broader challenges regarding mining and exploitation of natural resources, illustrating the need for open dialogue between local communities and government officials. As they work toward solutions, there’s hope that these efforts will lead to more considerate developmental approaches that acknowledge and prioritize the voices of the landowners.
Furthermore, the recent critical feedback regarding Vosarogo’s consultations with landowners highlights the ongoing need for meaningful engagement. A proactive approach could lead to a renewed commitment to fostering positive connections, potentially easing tensions and creating pathways for more equitable development efforts in the Namosi region.
