Rebuilding Sugar Confidence: A Path Forward for Fiji

Efforts to restore confidence throughout the sugar industry are currently underway, according to Nitya Reddy, chairman of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). His remarks came following the FSC’s annual general meeting held in Lautoka.

Reddy noted that despite a 15 percent decrease in cane production due to unfavorable weather conditions, there was a 12 percent increase in sales revenue and a 10 percent rise in the corporate share of proceeds. He acknowledged that the sugar industry, particularly the FSC, faces significant challenges, marking a critical time that will influence both its history and future.

“We are channeling all our efforts and resources into rebuilding confidence across the industry, which is a significant challenge,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of improving manufacturing efficiency, advocating for increased cane production, and enhancing transport and harvesting logistics through farm mechanization.

The chairman pointed out the necessity for “structural reforms” within the industry. He stressed that dependability on the FSC alone is no longer viable, as every sector must take responsibility for its performance and outcomes.

With ongoing support from various stakeholders, Reddy expressed optimism about creating a stronger and more sustainable future for Fiji’s sugar industry.
