A rehabilitation program has been initiated in Vanua Levu for those impacted by Tropical Cyclone Rae. Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka, who is currently visiting affected areas, announced that the ministry is mobilizing resources to support recovery efforts.

The minister revealed that a supply of seeds and planting materials is prepared for distribution, especially within the Eastern and Northern divisions. Dry seeds are available at all agriculture stations, while seedlings for crops such as eggplant, tomato, and bongo chili are expected to be ready for distribution by next week.

In his discussions with Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima, Ditoka received updates on the aftermath of the cyclone. Despite avoiding severe damages, the heavy rainfall caused by TC Rae has resulted in localized flooding, hindering land preparation for new crops. The minister acknowledged that while the adverse weather may delay the establishment of crops, efforts are underway to kick-start rehabilitation as soon as conditions improve.

The current situation is reminiscent of prior emergencies, where effective community responses and infrastructure improvements played a crucial role in mitigating disaster impacts. The proactive measures, including stockpiling agricultural resources and community cooperation, underline the strong commitment to recovery shared among local authorities and residents.

As Vanua Levu moves forward from this weather challenge, the emphasis on rehabilitation reflects hope for a swift recovery and the resilience of the community in the face of adversity. Continued efforts to provide essential resources will contribute positively to restoring livelihoods and fostering a renewed sense of security.
