Rebuilding Fiji’s Schools: The Urgent Need for Holistic Education

Fiji’s educational landscape is facing significant challenges, with issues such as drug use, violence, and negative external influences affecting students. Govind Singh, president of the School Management Association of Fiji, expressed these concerns during the organization’s biennial conference in Nausori. He emphasized that the responsibility for addressing these issues cannot rest solely with teachers, highlighting the necessity for a more comprehensive approach to education that focuses on character development.

Singh suggested that budget discussions should prioritize funding for curriculum revisions aimed at nurturing the character of students and thereby strengthening the moral fabric of the nation. He noted with concern the prevalence of violence and substance abuse among students, stating that there is a clear need for improved character education within schools.

Additionally, Singh pointed out that over 90 percent of Fiji’s schools are operated by faith-based organizations, making the country a distinctive case in the Pacific region. He advocated for stronger partnerships between school management and local communities to ensure that school governance and programs align with community values and needs.

Reinforcing the idea that a child’s education is a collective effort, Singh remarked on the deteriorating relationship between school management and communities over the past decade. He referenced the People’s Coalition Government’s commitment to enhancing democratic engagement within school management committees. However, he expressed disappointment at the slow progress in establishing the necessary supportive structures.

Singh also called for the revival of the Education Forum, which has yet to materialize, to facilitate collaboration among stakeholders in the educational sector.
