The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for expected wet weather over the next two days. In a meeting earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima collaborated with leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority, to finalize operational plans and ensure resources are ready to support affected communities.

Despite heavy rain overnight, the FRA reports that connecting roads across the island are currently clear and accessibility remains unaffected. Thanks to detailed forecasts from the Fiji Meteorological Service, stakeholders are refining their strategies to enhance preparedness.

The Ministry of Education is taking precautions by preparing schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying areas are being urged to prepare promptly and move to higher ground during daylight hours to reduce risk. There is a strong recommendation to avoid unnecessary travel at night to ensure safety and support first responders effectively. Those who need clarification on evacuation centers or require assistance are advised to reach out to local authorities or the police immediately.

Farmers are also being urged to relocate livestock to higher ground and implement safety measures to protect their livelihoods. Rainima has emphasized the importance of safety during these conditions, urging people to stay attuned to weather updates and take early actions to prepare. The Commissioner’s Office will continuously monitor the situation and provide timely updates to the community.

For assistance, residents are encouraged to contact the Commissioner Northern’s Office or their nearest police station in cases of emergencies.

This proactive response demonstrates a commitment to community safety and readiness, showcasing the collaborative efforts of various agencies to protect residents from potential flooding and weather-related challenges. As the community braces for adverse weather, the emphasis on preparedness and safety allows for a hopeful outlook amidst the uncertainty.
