A concerted effort by law enforcement agencies has led to the arrest of ten individuals for drunk driving during recent Random Breath Test (RBT) operations in Nadi and Suva. Conducted on a night of heightened vigilance, the operations aimed to promote road safety and deter alcohol-related incidents.
In Nadi, the third night of these operations along the Nadi-Namaka corridor resulted in officers testing 351 drivers. Of those tested, nine were arrested, including a police officer from the Nadi region who was allegedly driving under the influence. Alongside these arrests, thirteen other drivers were tested and subsequently released after their blood alcohol levels were found to be below the legal limit.
Meanwhile, in the capital city of Suva, a total of 450 drivers were screened, leading to one arrest. Three additional drivers were permitted to leave after their results indicated they were under the legal alcohol limit.
Officials from the police department have reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring that the law is enforced uniformly across all road users, including police personnel. This stance is part of a broader initiative to improve road safety and mitigate the risks associated with alcohol consumption while driving.
These efforts signify a promising move towards safer roads, as law enforcement continues to prioritize the wellbeing of the community and uphold the standards necessary for responsible road usage.
