The village of Raviravi in Macuata has recently been awarded a financial boost of $10,000 to facilitate its ongoing mangrove restoration initiatives. Minister for Forestry Alitia Bainivalu highlighted that this funding forms part of a broader climate partnership with the Pacific Community, specifically under the Mangrove Restoration for Carbon Offset program.

The $10,000 is included in a substantial $168,688.42 donation provided by SK Innovation, a South Korean energy firm committed to supporting climate action efforts in Fiji through community engagement and coastal conservation practices. Alitia Bainivalu stated that collaboration between the Ministry of Fisheries and the Pacific Community is essential, aiming to plant mangroves across three villages. This project has benefited significantly from SK Innovation’s contribution of approximately US$75,000.

As part of ongoing efforts, 10,000 mangroves have already been successfully planted in Raviravi, with continuous monitoring to ensure their growth and survival. The outcomes of this pilot project are expected to inform the expansion of similar initiatives to other coastal areas.

Project Coordinator Emosi Qaumila expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting the positive impacts observed along the coastline, including enhanced protection against natural elements and improved food security for the local community. “Thank you to the government for this initiative. We have observed significant changes in our coast and oceans; we are now better protected, and our food sources are more secure,” Qaumila remarked.

Additionally, the villages of Loa in Cakaudrove and Nukusa in Udu Point have also benefited from the funding, showcasing the government’s push to encourage more coastal communities to engage in the protection of mangrove forests and marine ecosystems.

This initiative represents a critical step in combating climate change, restoring vital ecosystems, and enhancing the resilience of local communities against environmental changes. The collective efforts shown in Raviravi and neighboring villages can serve as inspiring examples for other regions aiming to restore their natural habitats and improve community livelihoods.

Furthermore, this positive trend aligns with ongoing regional efforts highlighted in similar restoration projects across Fiji, reinforcing the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
