In response to rising social challenges, the vanua of Betoraurau has implemented stringent measures aimed at safeguarding the community from various issues, particularly those related to substance abuse and family well-being. Na Momo Levu na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, has taken a proactive stance in addressing critical matters such as drug use, food security, poverty, financial empowerment, the quality of education, and the safety of women and children.

Ratu Viliame emphasized his commitment to making a meaningful impact on the lives of his people. He stated, “One of the greatest challenges I face is shifting the mindset of my people, helping them to understand that the solutions to our challenges lie within ourselves.” His initiatives are designed to foster resilience within the community, particularly in the face of adversity.

To encourage family bonding and spiritual growth, the Bose Vanua has mandated that the consumption of kava in the village must cease by midnight on Saturdays until 6 PM on Sundays. This decision aims to motivate residents to participate in church services and prioritize quality family time during Sunday meals.

Additionally, a restriction has been placed on vehicle access to the village between 10 PM and 5 AM, a measure intended to enhance community safety and curtail the illegal sale and use of drugs, which tends to escalate during nighttime hours. Ratu Viliame has assured that all initiatives will be executed within the confines of the law.

He expressed strong support for the establishment of village bylaws, noting the absence of formal legal authority as a significant barrier to effectively tackling these pressing social issues. Ratu Viliame highlighted the positive discussions on this topic during a recent GCC meeting and expressed hope for continued progress in formalizing regulations that would aid the community.

These efforts by Ratu Viliame and the vanua of Betoraurau reflect a hopeful step towards addressing significant social challenges within the community, demonstrating a collective commitment to nurturing a safer, more resilient environment for all its members. The hope is that these initiatives can serve as a model for other communities facing similar challenges, fostering a culture of cooperation and proactive problem-solving.
