Ratu Sukuna Park is currently undergoing final touch-ups, and it remains under the management of Menon Construction Ltd, not the Suva City Council (SCC), according to Chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa. His remarks came in response to concerns regarding littering in the park, which was refurbished and reopened last year.
Boseiwaqa stressed the importance of civic pride, urging citizens to maintain the park’s cleanliness and to foster a sense of responsibility toward their communal spaces. “The public should really learn the importance of civic pride and change their mentality and attitude,” he noted.
He elaborated that Menon Construction Ltd has yet to complete the installation of lighting fixtures in the park, which is a prerequisite for the official handover to the SCC. “Once they complete that, they will fully hand over the park,” he stated, explaining that until the construction company finishes its work, the council cannot actively manage or clean the area.
Despite the ongoing issues, Boseiwaqa assured the public that the council is keeping a close watch on the project’s expenses and tackling the lingering concerns. “We are very attentive to the variation costs involved in these minor tasks,” he added, mentioning that the completion timeline faced delays, particularly due to issues related to the lighting.
Overall, the park represents a significant investment in community infrastructure, symbolizing not only a rebuilt green space but also a collective effort to maintain and enhance Suva’s environment. With ongoing community engagement and greater awareness, there is a hopeful outlook for the park to thrive as a cherished asset for future generations.
In earlier discussions, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also emphasized the importance of such public spaces for community well-being, reinforcing that parks like Ratu Sukuna are vital for health, recreation, and as venues for family gatherings. The ongoing commitment from both the council and the community suggests a positive direction for maintaining the park’s beauty and utility.
