Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has urged all Fijians to take responsibility for the upkeep of the newly redeveloped Ratu Sukuna Park, which was completed at a cost of $7 million. At the park’s opening ceremony on Monday evening, Mr. Kamikamica highlighted the need to preserve the park as a source of comfort and pride for future generations.
He noted that the park’s redevelopment represents a significant transformation and showcases the nation’s progress along with its commitment to urban renewal. The upgraded park now includes modern features such as a new podium structure, design night lights, contemporary park furniture, a digital screen with surround sound, and an enhanced landscape that harmonizes hardscape with green spaces.
“The new water feature complements Ratu Sukuna’s monument, providing a tranquil atmosphere to the park,” Mr. Kamikamica remarked. He described the park as more than merely a green space; it serves as an oasis in the busy city, offering peace, tranquility, creativity, and a fresh start.
“This is a venue where individuals can pause, connect with loved ones, and chart a new course in life,” he added. He emphasized that parks like Ratu Sukuna are vital for the health and well-being of communities. They offer areas for families to gather, for children to play, and for individuals to find solace amid nature. Such spaces enhance the livability of cities, ensuring they are places where residents can thrive, not just work and live.
Kamikamica called for a collective effort to transform Suva into a city enriched by nature, reinforcing its standing as one of the top cities for environmental quality on the Global Cities Index.
