Ratu Sukuna Bowl: Unity, Integrity, and a Drug-Free Fiji

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition represents more than just athletic participation. This sentiment was expressed by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

The theme for this year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai embraced the challenge set forth by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the responsibilities of both forces and their roles in shaping a better Fiji.

Kalouniwai stated, “It’s about the spirit that we all have in the forces, it’s about who we are, what we represent, and what we can do for the future of this country.” He mentioned that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has initiated a path of reconciliation to move forward positively.

He also acknowledged the Fiji Police Force’s struggles with the growing drug crisis impacting communities, hoping they can maintain high moral standards while fulfilling their duties during the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl.

Chew asserted that Nasova is the rightful home for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, expressing eagerness for the Police Force to defend the trophy. “As career police officers, we are trained to be suspicious of everyone,” he noted, indicating a strategic perspective on the competition.

Last year, the Police managed to retain the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a drawn match, concluding 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew reiterated their stand against drugs, emphasizing the importance of saying no to substance abuse.

Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Commercial Officer, Salman Khan, highlighted Fiji’s passion for rugby, noting that this event showcases the disciplined forces competing not just for victory, but for a trophy symbolizing camaraderie and spirited rivalry. “To the players, compete with integrity, passion, and pride for your team,” Khan advised, reminding them of the legacy they uphold.

The Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, coinciding with other sports activities in the same week.
