Ratu Sukuna Bowl: More Than Just a Game

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Suku-na Bowl competition goes beyond mere sports participation, as highlighted by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the event’s launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of the responsibilities held by both forces in contributing to a better Fiji, responding to the challenge issued by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew.

“It’s more than just winning or losing; it embodies the spirit we all share in the forces, our identity, and what we can achieve for the future of this country,” Kalouniwai stated. He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has undertaken efforts toward reconciliation to chart a new course ahead.

Meanwhile, Chew pointed to the ongoing drug crisis affecting communities and reiterated the Fiji Police Force’s readiness to defend the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, asserting that Nasova is its rightful home. “As career police officers, we must remain vigilant and consider any strategies at play,” he remarked.

Last year, the police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl following a draw at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, with Chew advocating for a strong stance against drugs amid rising social issues. He added that since the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa was presented to the public in 2022, it has had only one home—Nasova.

Vodafone Fiji Chief Commercial Officer Salman Khan spoke about Fiji’s passion for rugby, noting that the event showcases the disciplined forces competing not only for victory but for a trophy that symbolizes camaraderie and spirited rivalry. He urged players to compete with integrity and pride, reminding them of their role in carrying forward the legacy of past champions and the aspirations of future generations.

The tentative date for this year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, coinciding with other sporting events taking place that week.
