Delai Naiqasiqasi is set to welcome a new leader today as Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, officially takes office following a ceremonial inauguration at State House this morning.
Despite his impressive political career, including a tenure as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ratu Naiqama’s early life was marked by challenges that shaped his resilience. Born into modest circumstances, he demonstrated a fierce determination to thrive. Friends who have known him throughout his life recognized his drive to succeed, a trait that eventually led him into politics.
Raised primarily by his mother, Adi Unaisi Lalabalavu, while his father, Ratu Glanville Wellington Lalabalavu, served in the military during the conflict against communist guerrillas in Malaya, Ratu Naiqama grew up in the suburbs of Suva and later in Somosomo village, Taveuni. He completed his education at several institutions, including Suva Methodist Primary School, Dudley Intermediate and Secondary School, and Ratu Sukuna Memorial School.
After finishing his studies, he began his career at the Native Land Trust Board, where he gained a reputation for distinction in land and estate management. His educational pursuits took him beyond Fiji, with academic experiences in the United States, Israel, and even at Harvard University, culminating in a Masters Degree in International Development.
His long-time friend, Savenaca Kamikamica, emphasized that Ratu Naiqama’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a suitable candidate for the presidency. Kamikamica noted that Ratu Naiqama does not see race as a dividing factor and is always willing to support both prominent and humble requests, a quality that sets him apart as a leader.
Moreover, Ratu Naiqama’s talents extended to sports, particularly rugby, where he was seen as a potential national team player if he had pursued that path further. His journey from humble beginnings to the presidency serves as an inspiring testament to his commitment to serve and uplift his community.
The appointment of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu as President of the Republic of Fiji marks not only a personal achievement but also a beacon of hope for many who strive for greatness despite adversity. His leadership is anticipated to reflect understanding, inclusion, and a dedication to the people of Fiji, positioning him as a figure of unity in these times.
As Ratu Naiqama steps into his new role, many are optimistic about the positive changes he will bring, embodying the spirit of resilience and dedication that characterized his journey thus far.
