The SR Ubuntu 7s team emerged victorious at the first-ever Ratu Filise Sevens tournament held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, clinching the title after a narrow 21-19 win against the Saint Gabriel Nakavika team in a thrilling cup final. Both teams showcased exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament, with SR Ubuntu defeating the Viti Roofing Fiji Sports Council’s Grassroots team 24-7, while Saint Gabriel Nakavika secured a 15-5 victory over the Nahehevia Patriots in the semi-finals.
The tournament featured a packed event schedule, beginning with the men’s cup quarter-finals where the FSC Grassroots team triumphed over the Ravuka Sharks with a score of 26-12. The SR Ubuntu team also convincingly defeated the tournament hosts, Ratu Filise, with a 24-0 scoreline, while the Devo Babas faced defeat against the Nahehevia Patriots (0-7). Additionally, the under-21 competition saw the FSC Grassroots U21 team narrowly defeating the Axellerate Aflame Brothers 12-10 in the cup final.
Organized by the Ratu Filise Rugby Club of Namatakula since its inception in 1920, this tournament is seen as a significant milestone for the club, marking its first time hosting such an event. Tournament coordinator Selo Sanawa indicated that it took five months of planning to bring the event to fruition, emphasizing themes of supporting grassroots rugby, promoting health awareness by saying no to drugs, and fighting domestic violence against women and children.
