The Grassroots Fiji 7s series is poised to enhance rugby development in the Northern Division next week, with internationally recognized ambassador Rasta Rasivhenge leading outreach initiatives in Cakaudrove, Bua, and Macuata. This second leg, branded as the Agromarketing Grassroots Fiji 7s, will take place in Bua on January 23-24.
This northern leg represents a significant milestone in the Fiji Sports Council’s ongoing commitment to strengthen grassroots rugby and align local competitions with national standards. Rasivhenge will be accompanied by Fiji Sports Council CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure, as they engage with players, team officials, and provincial stakeholders to share the vision and expectations for the series.
A pivotal aspect of this leg includes the implementation of a revised tournament format, which mandates all teams to register with recognized provincial unions and receive formal acknowledgment from the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). To maintain fairness and accountability, the new rules stipulate that players can only represent one team throughout the series.
“Grassroots rugby is where our talent is born. By engaging directly with communities and unions, we are ensuring everyone understands the pathway, the standards required, and the opportunities available through the Grassroots Fiji 7s,” Rasivhenge stated.
Additionally, the series has expanded its off-field development program, making training mandatory for coaches, strength and conditioning officials, and team managers. Vakalalabure emphasized the importance of this requirement, noting that all team managers from the last round are expected to appoint officials to attend the training, with attendance being compulsory.
“Upon completion, participants will be issued with the FRU Team Manager Certificate, valid for two years. This initiative is crucial for raising standards, improving governance at the grassroots level, and ensuring that teams are effectively managed both on and off the field,” Vakalalabure explained.
Strong participation from Northern-based teams is anticipated as the Grassroots Fiji 7s continues to gather momentum across the nation. The series not only incorporates competitive rugby but also emphasizes education and long-term sustainability for the sport.
This tour reflects the tournament’s mission to cultivate rugby talent from the community level while establishing appropriate structures and standards. With Rasivhenge actively engaging with communities and key officials, the Grassroots Fiji 7s is emerging as a vital platform for education and development in rugby throughout Fiji.
