Rarawai Sugar Mill to Resume Crushing, Sparking Momentum in Fiji’s Sugar Sector

The Rarawai Sugar Mill is set to resume its crushing operations tomorrow, marking a pivotal moment in the government’s continued efforts to revitalize and stabilize the sugar industry. This follows the mill’s closure after it suffered significant damage due to a fire on September 17.

Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, announced in Parliament that extensive testing and trials have been successfully completed at the Ba mill, confirming that it is prepared for full operation once again. He expressed optimism regarding this development, stating that it serves as a strong testament to the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts and the gradual resurgence of the industry after experiencing numerous challenges.

Singh emphasized that the resumption of operations acts as a crucial sign of progress, particularly for sugarcane growers in the Western Division. These farmers have been eagerly awaiting enhanced mill reliability to facilitate timely harvesting and delivery of cane.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring production capacity across all mills and providing growers with the necessary support through improved infrastructure, consistent crushing schedules, and enhanced overall operational efficiency within the sector. This renewed momentum in the sugar industry brings hope for a more stable and productive future for all stakeholders involved.
