Businessman George Shiu Raj of Rakiraki believes that the town has immense potential for tourism investment. He highlighted the region, known as Fiji’s suncoast, which already features popular resorts such as Volivoli Beach Resort, Duadua Beach Resort, and Wananavu Beach Resort, owned by Rups Industries. According to Mr. Shiu Raj, this growth in hospitality suggests a positive trajectory for Rakiraki’s tourism sector, and he noted that additional small hotels are on the way.

In his remarks, Mr. Shiu Raj called on the government to consider establishing a tax-free zone for the area surrounding Rakiraki, particularly from Rabulu. He expressed that relaxing government policies would facilitate investments and create more opportunities for the local economy.

The sentiment expressed by Mr. Shiu Raj reflects a growing optimism in Rakiraki, which resonates with recent efforts to revitalize the region’s economy following the closure of the local sugar mill. Past articles have discussed not only the establishment of tax-free zones but also various projects aimed at fostering business growth, including the launch of new supermarkets and service stations. These ventures not only promote local entrepreneurship but have also been shown to enhance job creation, particularly empowering women in the workforce.

Overall, the focus on enhancing tourism and supporting business developments in Rakiraki illustrates a hopeful outlook for the local economy, building resilience and community vitality despite previous economic challenges.
