Rakiraki’s Flooding Crisis: Can Town Council Turn the Tide?

Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are making significant efforts to mitigate flooding issues in Rakiraki. Following a survey conducted in 2022, the town experienced considerable economic losses between $200,000 and $300,000 due to the aftermath of 27 flooding incidents.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa reported to Parliament that flooding in Rakiraki has been a chronic issue, largely related to its geographical characteristics and climate. Key areas impacted by these floods include Naqoro Flat and the Nakauvadra Range backroad.

Rakiraki is particularly vulnerable to flash floods, especially during heavy rainfall, the wet season, and cyclone periods. Minister Nalumisa noted that between 2018 and 2022, the town recorded 27 floods, averaging four incidents annually, which he described as a significant concern.

He explained that floods frequently disrupt access to the town, with main roads and businesses typically requiring two to three days for cleanup operations. The survey highlighted that losses to local businesses from flooding are substantial for a small town, impacting livelihoods significantly.

In addition to physical damages, the aftermath of flooding has led to health concerns, with increased instances of diseases like leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever due to contaminated water sources and poor sanitation.

To address these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy, which includes activating a Disaster Management Operation typically from November to April.
