Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are taking urgent measures to mitigate flooding in the area. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that Rakiraki experienced financial losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to damage from 27 flooding incidents.

Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding has been an ongoing concern, primarily due to the town’s geographical characteristics and climate. Key areas affected include Naqoro Flat and the backroad to the Nakauvadra Range.

Rakiraki is particularly vulnerable to flash floods during heavy rain, especially in the wet and cyclone seasons. Nalumisa noted there have been 27 recorded floods since 2018, averaging four floods annually, which poses significant challenges for the town. He pointed out that flooding often leads to road closures, with public routes and businesses typically requiring two to three days for cleanup.

The survey from 2022 revealed that business losses in this small town are substantial, amounting to $200,000 to $300,000.

Moreover, Nalumisa mentioned that the aftermath of such flooding contributes to health risks, increasing the likelihood of diseases like leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever due to contaminated water and poor sanitation conditions.

To address these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy that includes a Disaster Management Operation. This strategy is set to activate in November and deactivate in April each year.
