Rakiraki’s Flood Crisis: Are Measures Enough?

Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are taking urgent measures to mitigate flooding issues in Rakiraki. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that the town suffered financial losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to damages caused by 27 flooding events.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding has consistently plagued Rakiraki, exacerbated by its geographical features and weather patterns. Key areas at risk include Naqoro Flat and the backroad leading to the Nakauvadra Range.

Rakiraki is particularly susceptible to flash floods during heavy rainfall, especially in the wet and cyclone seasons. “Since 2018, we have documented 27 floods, averaging about four each year, which is a significant concern,” Mr. Nalumisa noted.

Flooding typically disrupts the town, leading to temporary closures of public roads and businesses often requiring two to three days for cleanup efforts. The economic impact on local businesses, as indicated in the 2022 survey by the Rakiraki Town Council, represents a considerable challenge for the small community.

Additionally, Mr. Nalumisa pointed out that the aftermath of flooding results in increased health risks, with rising cases of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever due to contaminated water, inadequate sanitation, and a surge in mosquito populations.

To tackle these issues, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy designed to respond to such emergencies. This policy will typically be activated in November and remain in effect until April.
