Government officials and Rakiraki Town Council leaders are actively working to address flooding issues in Rakiraki. A survey conducted in 2022 indicated that the town suffered economic losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to the damage caused by 27 floods.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding in Rakiraki has become a recurring issue, largely attributed to its geographical location and climatic conditions. Areas severely impacted include Naqoro Flat and the backroad to the Nakauvadra Range.
Rakiraki faces a high risk of flash floods during heavy rain, particularly in the wet and cyclone seasons. “Since 2018, we have recorded 27 floods, averaging four floods each year in Rakiraki. That is a significant number,” Mr. Nalumisa stated. He noted that floods often result in road closures, with cleanup efforts for public roads and businesses typically taking two to three days.
The survey from the Rakiraki Town Council in 2022 revealed that the economic impact on local businesses amounted to approximately $200,000 to $300,000, a considerable blow to the town’s economy. Additionally, Mr. Nalumisa pointed out that the aftermath of flooding often leads to an increase in health issues such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever due to contaminated water and poor sanitation, alongside a rise in disease-carrying mosquitoes.
To combat these risks, Mr. Nalumisa informed that the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy, which includes a Disaster Management Operation. This policy is typically activated in November and deactivated in April of the following year.
