Government officials and executives from the Rakiraki Town Council are intensifying efforts to combat flooding in the area. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that Rakiraki Town suffered financial losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to destruction caused by 27 flooding events.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding has been a long-standing issue, primarily attributed to the town’s geographical location and its climatic conditions. Key areas that have been significantly impacted include Naqoro Flat and the backroad of the Nakauvadra Range.
Rakiraki is particularly susceptible to flash floods during heavy rainfall, especially throughout the wet and cyclone seasons. Mr. Nalumisa pointed out that since 2018, there have been 27 recorded flooding incidents, with an average of four floods occurring each year, which he described as alarmingly high.
He noted that flooding often leads to the closure of the town, with public roads and businesses typically requiring two to three days for cleanup. According to the 2022 survey by the Rakiraki Town Council, the financial impact on local businesses was significant, amounting to losses of approximately $200,000 to $300,000, which can greatly affect the livelihoods in such a small community.
Mr. Nalumisa also warned that the aftermath of flooding increases the risk of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever due to contaminated water, inadequate sanitation, and the proliferation of disease-carrying mosquitoes.
To address these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has formulated a Disaster Management Policy, which includes the implementation of a Disaster Management Operation. This operation is typically set to begin in November and conclude the following April.
