Rakiraki Faces Flood Crisis: What’s Being Done to Protect the Town?

Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are intensifying efforts to mitigate flooding in Rakiraki. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that the town suffered losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to damages from 27 floods.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding has been a recurring issue in Rakiraki, primarily due to its geographical location and climate. Key areas impacted by flooding include Naqoro Flat and the Nakauvadra Range backroad.

Rakiraki frequently experiences flash floods during heavy rainfall, particularly in the wet and cyclone seasons. “Since 2018, there have been 27 recorded floods, averaging four floods each year in Rakiraki. This is a significant concern,” said Mr. Nalumisa. He noted that floods often lead to the closure of the town, with public roads and businesses requiring two to three days for cleanup efforts.

The 2022 survey conducted by the Rakiraki Town Council indicated that businesses faced substantial losses of about $200,000 to $300,000, which is a significant blow for this small community.

In addition to economic repercussions, Mr. Nalumisa warned of an increased risk of diseases, such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever, attributed to contaminated water, inadequate sanitation, and a rise in mosquito populations following floods.

To address these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy, which outlines procedures for disaster response. This plan is typically activated in November and remains in effect until April.
