Government officials and executives from the Rakiraki Town Council are intensifying efforts to address flooding issues in Rakiraki. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that the town suffered losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to the destruction caused by 27 flood events.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa informed Parliament that flooding is a longstanding issue in Rakiraki, driven chiefly by its geographical features and climatic conditions. Key areas impacted include Naqoro Flat and the Nakauvadra Range backroad.

Rakiraki is particularly susceptible to flash floods during heavy rainfall, especially during the rainy season and cyclone season. “Since 2018, we have recorded 27 floods, averaging four floods each year in Rakiraki. That is indeed a significant number,” Mr. Nalumisa stated. He further noted that the town often faces closures due to flooding, with main roads and businesses typically taking two to three days to clean up and restore operations.

The survey conducted by the Rakiraki Town Council highlighted that losses for local businesses were estimated between $200,000 and $300,000, which poses a serious economic challenge for the small community. Mr. Nalumisa emphasized that the aftermath of these floods leads to increased health risks, including diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever, caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and a surge in mosquito populations.

In response to mitigate these health risks, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy that encompasses a Disaster Management Operation. This operation is typically activated in November and deactivated the following April.
