Ratu Saverio Matairakula, a prop and hooker for the DHL Raiwaqa Rugby Football Club’s Under-21 team, has credited their recent achievements at the 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s to extensive pre-tournament training over the past two months. The tournament is taking place at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, where Raiwaqa has celebrated wins against Saint Michael Navesibasaga and Sydney Bula, with another match against Marist scheduled for later today.

The 20-year-old Matairakula, hailing from Kadavu, expressed his pride in participating in this prestigious event, marking their second appearance after last year’s debut. He noted that the team’s coach has drawn parallels between the Marist 7s and the world-renowned Hong Kong 7s, which has invigorated the players with enthusiasm.

Aiming to grab the attention of scouts for the Drua development squad, Matairakula is motivated to elevate his performance on the field, inspired by the notable Fijian Drua number 8, Meli Derenalagi. He remains optimistic that the team’s recent victories will propel them towards clinching the title by the tournament’s end on Saturday.

The Marist 7s is not just a stage for local teams to highlight their skills but also a testament to the growth of rugby in the region. This year’s tournament features robust participation from both local and international teams, culminating in an exciting atmosphere for fans, enhanced by live match coverage.

This annual event provides a crucial platform for emerging rugby talents, showcasing the dedication of teams to advancing the sport within Fiji. Tournaments like the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s play a vital role in uniting communities and motivating future generations of athletes. The event’s competitive spirit and inclusivity foster a sense of hope and camaraderie among players and supporters, contributing positively to the rugby culture in the Pacific.
