Frustrated by inconsistent rubbish collection, residents of Raiwaqa in Suva took the initiative to improve their community during the school holidays by organizing a clean-up effort. The residents, including parents and students, collaborated to clear blocked drains and eliminate litter, aiming to enhance sanitation in their neighborhood.
Marisia Vusonilawa, a resident, expressed the community’s dissatisfaction with the current waste management situation. She stated, “The rubbish is not collected unless we call the authorities to come and collect it, and we do that all the time.” This frustration propelled the residents to take action during the holidays, as they banded together to clean up their compounds and dig out drains that had become clogged with debris. “When it rains, the water overflows, and we have a problem in our area,” Vusonilawa added.
The clean-up initiative served not only to address immediate sanitation issues but also acted as an educational opportunity for residents about the importance of a clean environment. Vusonilawa highlighted the value of involving the younger generation in such activities, stating, “This is important, and we are glad that our children have joined us in this initiative because they are the future. When they are involved, they will ensure the compounds and especially the drains are kept clean.”
This community-driven effort reflects a growing sense of collective responsibility among residents, showcasing their commitment to maintaining a healthy and sanitary living environment.
