Every morning heralds a new day filled with challenges, but for Akosita Lomawai, the determination to support her family and achieve her dreams fuels her drive. A well-known figure among the vendors and customers at the Raiwaqa market, Akosita is always eager to assist with their culinary needs, whether it involves catering to a cultural event or simply providing fresh ingredients for a home-cooked meal.
Akosita’s story is one steeped in love and responsibility. “I find peace in my market work. Many people come to buy from me, and on a good day, I can earn around $350,” she shares. Her routine involves purchasing fresh produce directly from farmers at dawn to ensure she has the best selection for her customers when she sets up her stall by 9 AM. She offers a diverse range of fruits and vegetables, including bananas, plantains, and locally grown specialties such as Chinese cabbage, rourou (taro leaves), bele, moca, and root crops like dalo (taro) and tavioka (cassava).
Based in Naceva, Lau, Akosita, alongside her husband, is not just raising their own biological child, who is in Year 2, but also cares for three additional children. Her forward-thinking approach ensures that she balances her market earnings with the need to support family and community obligations while also saving for unexpected challenges. “Everything from our market earnings goes towards family, church, and village obligations. I also help my husband whenever needed,” she explains.
Akosita’s aspirations go beyond the market; she has completed her first year of business studies at Fiji National University and is keen on finishing her diploma. “I just want to encourage women in Fiji – let us not neglect our responsibilities. We play an important role in supporting our husbands and our families,” she emphasizes.
Her story shines a light on the remarkable strength of Fijian women, demonstrating that with faith and perseverance, even a humble market stall can transcend economic challenges to become a source of inspiration. Akosita Lomawai is not just a vendor; she is a beacon of hope and motivation for others navigating their paths in life. Her journey is a testament to how hard work can pave the way for a better future, empowering individuals and fortifying communities.
