Raiwalui Triumphs: The New Face of Fijian Rugby

Former Flying Fijians coach Simon Raiwalui outperformed ten strong candidates to win the 2023 FIJI Water Coach of the Year Award. Although Raiwalui was not in attendance at the 2023 Fiji Sports Awards, his contributions to the Flying Fijians, particularly during the lead-up to and at the Rugby World Cup in France, were duly recognized.

Appointed as the Flying Fijians coach in February of the previous year, Raiwalui transformed the team’s environment during camp, fostering a connection between the players and their cultural roots. He was instrumental in the team’s success at the 2023 Pacific Nations Cup, achieving a historic victory against Australia in the Rugby World Cup, marking the first win over them in 69 years and propelling the team to the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Raiwalui was also nominated for the World Rugby Coach of the Year award. “Well earned,” Mazey commented. He noted Raiwalui’s significant achievements since his appointment, including the team’s quarter-final run at the World Cup, amidst financial challenges that required raising nearly $12 million.

Additionally, the Flying Fijians received recognition by winning the Asco Motors Team of the Year award, following their impressive performance at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, which placed them above six other notable nominees. “I would have liked to see rugby win all the awards, but we are very happy with these results,” Mazey expressed.

Sale Sorovaki accepted the award on behalf of Raiwalui, while FRU chief executive Rovereto Nayacalevu collected the award for the Flying Fijians.
