Raiwalui Triumphs: A Coach’s Journey to Glory

Former Flying Fijians coach Simon Raiwalui has won the 2023 FIJI Water Coach of the Year Award, overcoming ten strong competitors. Although Raiwalui was absent from the 2023 Fiji Sports Awards, his contributions to the Flying Fijians, especially during the Rugby World Cup in France, were recognized.

Since his appointment as the Flying Fijians coach in February of last year, Raiwalui has transformed the team dynamics, fostering a connection among players to their heritage and community. He played a pivotal role in leading the team to victory in the 2023 Pacific Nations Cup, marking a historic win against Australia in the Rugby World Cup, a feat not achieved in 69 years, and guiding them to the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Raiwalui was also nominated for the World Rugby Coach of the Year award. FRU’s Mazey praised Raiwalui’s accomplishments, noting the challenges the team faced, including raising nearly $12 million amidst financial struggles, which showed the collaborative efforts between Raiwalui and the team.

Additionally, the Flying Fijians were honored with the Asco Motors Team of the Year award, celebrating their remarkable performance in the 2023 Rugby World Cup and competing against six other notable teams. Sale Sorovaki accepted the award on behalf of Raiwalui, while FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu accepted the award for the Flying Fijians.
