Small Pacific nations, alongside many parts of the world, are facing an urgent need for enhanced research capabilities to bolster climate finance and reinforce adaptation and resilience initiatives in the face of climate change. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Prof. Biman Prasad emphasized the necessity of research and evidence across various sectors to drive ambitions and actions against climate challenges during the closing remarks at the Global Development Conference 2024 held at the University of the South Pacific in Suva.

Prof. Prasad highlighted the importance of integrating research with policy-making, stating, “We need research to disrupt and challenge our conventional approaches.” He acknowledged the growing uncertainty in today’s world, noting that the foundations of science and knowledge are increasingly challenged by disruptions and a rise in anti-science sentiments exacerbated by new technologies.

The Minister conveyed the heightened demand for expertise, emphasizing the urgent need to restore the emphasis on evidence-based research and science. He called on the Global Development Network (GDN) community to effectively communicate their research to a public that is becoming increasingly disenchanted.

Additionally, Prof. Prasad remarked on the severe impacts of climate change in the Pacific region, urging more research focus on ocean sustainability, the blue economy, and the vital services oceans provide to humanity. He stressed that building resilience against climate impacts is essential and should not be considered an optional endeavor, particularly in light of the mounting pressures on public funding and rising debt levels.

This call to action reinforces the idea that collaborative efforts in research and public communication can lead to innovative solutions for climate adaptation, ultimately helping to secure a more sustainable future for vulnerable regions. By fostering a stronger connection between data and policy, the Pacific Islands can better navigate the challenges posed by climate change, paving the way for a resilient and adaptable society.

Summary: Small Pacific nations require enhanced research capabilities to tackle climate change challenges effectively, according to Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad. At the Global Development Conference 2024, he emphasized the need for integrating research with policy while highlighting the importance of effective communication and collaboration within the Global Development Network to engage a disillusioned public. Prof. Prasad also called for a focus on sustainable ocean economies, underscoring resilience building as a necessity rather than an option.
