Raising Awareness: The Silent Struggle of Hearing Impairment in Labasa

Many individuals underestimate the importance of ear care, according to audiometrist Nasif Mohammed from Hearing Aid Services in Australia. Recently, he conducted a two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, where he treated 40 patients, ranging in age from four to 80 years old.

Mohammed highlighted that many of the patients he encountered were suffering from various ear issues, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, blockages from wax, scar tissue, and discharge. He expressed concern that there is currently no audiometrist available in the northern region, forcing patients to travel to Suva for medical assistance.

He stressed the need for increased awareness about ear health and hopes that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa once a month to provide necessary care.

One notable case involved a female patient with hearing impairment who was initially feeling distressed. After receiving a hearing aid, her joy was evident as she was able to hear voices again, illustrating the profound impact that proper ear care can have on individuals’ lives.

Furthermore, he addressed the needs of students at the Labasa School for Special Education, many of whom require immediate medical attention and hearing aids. He reminisced about similar services he had provided before the pandemic and expressed a desire for increased community support to help children in need, including fundraising for overseas treatment options.

Mohammed concluded by emphasizing the critical role of ears in communication and the challenges faced by those living with hearing loss. His visit serves as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness and providing better access to ear health specialists, particularly in underserved areas.

This optimistic initiative not only highlights the need for improved ear health services but also opens up possibilities for community collaboration and support to enhance the quality of life for those struggling with hearing impairments.
