The six Fijian weightlifting athletes are making remarkable progress as they enter the fifth week of their intensive training camp in Apia, Samoa, which is a significant step towards their goals for the 2026 competitions. Head coach Hendry Elder has expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly singling out Taniela Rainibogi for his exceptional advancements during training sessions.

Elder noted, “Everyone is doing well. Currently, Taniela Rainibogi is very impressive in all his sessions. He is lifting much better than he did prior to winning the 2025 Commonwealth Championships.” Alongside Rainibogi, Poama Qaqa is also emerging as a promising athlete, demonstrating considerable potential as they approach the upcoming Oceania and Commonwealth Championships. Miriama Taletawa has been steadily improving as well, earning commendations from Elder for her dedication and progress.

“This fifth week of the six-week camp shows that this is a great investment for us,” Elder remarked. He emphasized that the rigorous training environment is preparing the athletes for major competitions ahead. The program is crafted to enhance intensity and discipline, supplemented by a diet rich in protein and carbohydrates to energize the athletes through the challenging loading phase. Adequate rest and optimal sleeping conditions are also prioritized to ensure the athletes can perform at their peak.

Elder highlighted the importance of rest, recovery, and maintaining focus while encouraging the athletes to draw strength from their faith as they navigate this demanding training camp. As the Fijian team gears up for imminent competitions, they will be joined by teams from Palau, Australia, and the Federated States of Micronesia, showcasing a collective spirit within the weightlifting community. The Fijian team plans to return home on the 16th of this month, reflecting on a fruitful training experience that promises to pay off in their competitive endeavors.
