Twenty-year-old Raina Kumar celebrated a significant achievement by winning the Women’s Division at the Denarau Pro-Am Open held yesterday. A first-year MBBS student at Fiji National University, Kumar expressed her surprise and happiness at her victory, noting the challenges she faces in balancing her studies with her passion for golf. “I don’t really have time to play this year since I’m a first-year MBBS student at FNU. This is my third competition, but I feel good after winning the Denarau Open,” she shared. Kumar secured her win with a gross score of 73.

In the Professional Division, Abid Hussein claimed victory with a gross score of 69, with Taitusi following closely in second with a score of 71. The event also recognized several other standout performances across different grades. In the Overall Gross Men category, Shakeel Pillay took the lead with a gross score of 73 while David Rickey excelled in the Overall Net Men category with an impressive net score of 66.

The A Grade competition featured Rakesh Chand topping the leaderboard with a gross score of 68, while Indra Warjan and Yasir Ahmed tied for second place, both scoring 70, with Warjan winning on countback. In B Grade, Damien Chan emerged victorious with a gross score of 68, followed by Paras Ram Mama at 71 and Alex Pattison in third with a score of 72.

Dharmesh Mani was the standout performer in C Grade with a gross score of 68, and Mislin Khan and Nathan Cook finished second and third, scoring 69 and 70, respectively. Furthermore, Lusiana Leqa captured the Overall Net Women title with an impressive net score of 61, and the Women’s category saw Samita Kumar and Mrs. Kwon rank first and second with net scores of 70 and 73.

This event not only showcased remarkable golf talent but also shines a light on the emerging athletes in Fiji.
