Joy remained unhindered by the rain as a Newtown family gathered to celebrate Mother’s Day at My Suva Park on Monday. The event was a multi-generational affair, bringing together grandparents, parents, and children to share hearty moments filled with music, friendly volleyball matches, and a delightful family BBQ.
This heartfelt celebration, orchestrated by the younger family members, served as a touching tribute to the women who raised them. Mary Dreqaso, a proud grandmother at 71, beamed with happiness as she enjoyed the company of her children and grandchildren. “It’s a nice Mother’s Day because all my grandchildren, my children—they are all together here celebrating with us,” she expressed, radiating joy at the effort her family put into the day.
Similarly, Vasemaca Veiqaravi, aged 73, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the meaningfulness of the gathering. She stated, “Every year, our family prepares something meaningful for the mothers and this year, a picnic at the park was their choice of celebration.”
Despite a gentle drizzle, their spirits remained high. Debra Arieta Pita, one of the granddaughters at just 15, conveyed the essence of the day, emphasizing its importance in honoring the struggles of the mothers. “Celebrating Mother’s Day for us is very important, because they struggle so much for us. We’re also making food for them because they always cook for us. It’s nice to give back to them.”
This event showcases the enduring bonds of family and the gratitude felt by younger generations towards their elders, reminiscent of the communal celebrations previously seen in Fiji, like family picnics during Easter. These gatherings emphasize the significance of togetherness, nurturing family ties, and creating lasting memories—illustrating a hopeful outlook for future familial connections.
In an age often driven by individualism, events like these remind us of the power of family unity, illustrating how love and gratitude can transcend any weather, shining a light of joy and hope in our lives.
