In 2001, National Youth Day celebrations in Lautoka were abruptly canceled due to heavy rain that morning, as reported in an article from The Fiji Times. The downpour forced organizers to cancel the previously scheduled activities, including a 9am reconciliation march and a main program set to commence at 9:30am at Narara Park, where the then Commissioner Western, Rupeni Nacewa, was slated to officiate as the chief guest.

Students who had traveled from remote areas such as Ba and Nadi to compete in the oratory contest faced disappointment upon learning of the cancellation. A member of the organizing committee explained that the decision had to be made considering the severe weather conditions. Many participants and students only found out about the cancellation after arriving at Narara Park.

The adverse weather extended beyond Lautoka, affecting other parts of the Western Division. The Nadi Weather Office confirmed that a trough of low pressure had led to widespread clouds and rain across the region. Forecasters indicated that such conditions were expected to persist, with afternoon showers continuing as long as the weather system remained in the area.

Despite the bleak weather in Lautoka, other youths found ways to engage in community service. In Suvavou Village, about 100 young residents participated in a clean-up campaign in honor of National Youth Day. Co-ordinator Mosese Tuilau noted that the initiative was aimed at preparing for an upcoming beach volleyball tournament. Additionally, a clean-up exercise was also conducted at the Korovou Prison compound, led by Sergeant Joeli Lau as part of Operation Sasamaki.

Such community efforts illustrate the resilience and spirit of the youth, as they turned a day that could have been defined by disappointment into an opportunity to make a positive impact in their surroundings.
