Forty sugarcane growers from the Tavua area have received a significant boost following the reopening of a decommissioned railway line that is vital for transporting their cane to Ba’s Rarawai Mill. This railway line, which connects farmers from Drumasi, Yaladro, and Tagitagi, was previously closed by the Fiji Sugar Corporation ahead of the 2025 crushing season, causing transportation challenges for the farmers.
The reopening decision was made by Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh, who took into account the concerns of the farmers voiced during recent consultations. “We are already in the third week of harvesting, and time is of the essence,” he stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Singh emphasized that this move reflects the Ministry’s strong commitment to supporting cane farmers, highlighting that the reactivated rail services will facilitate more efficient and cost-effective cane delivery, ultimately bolstering the sustainability of the sugar industry in the region.
The Fiji Cane Lorries Association, through its president Atish Kumar, welcomed the reopening as it would help reduce traffic congestion at the mill. Kumar pointed out that the railway system is crucial for keeping lorry turnaround times reasonable and ensuring drivers can promptly return to their farms, therefore maintaining the momentum of harvesting operations.
Moreover, the Ministry confirmed that restoration works on additional tramline networks are ongoing, thus allowing farmers to also use trucks for transporting cane where possible to prevent disruptions during harvest time.
This initiative aligns with previous government efforts aimed at improving transportation logistics within the sugar industry, which is vital for its revival. As infrastructure supports progress in the sugar sector, a hopeful outlook emerges for both farmers and the community, promising a more productive and sustainable future for Fiji’s sugar industry.
As the growers experience improvements with transportation, they may look forward to a fruitful harvesting season, supported by favorable conditions and collaborative government initiatives.
