The Frank Hilton Organization (FHO), a prominent advocate for children with disabilities in Fiji, is making significant strides in transforming lives through its mission of early detection, intervention, and access to essential healthcare and education. However, the organization faces challenges as the demand for its services has increased dramatically, surpassing available funding by approximately 40%. Requests for assistance have risen by an average of 25% annually, intensifying the pressure on FHO’s capabilities.

To address this financial shortfall, FHO is leveraging innovative fundraising initiatives, such as the much-anticipated “Amazing Wheelbarrow Race – Bara Battle.” Since its inception in 2016, this event has evolved into a vibrant community gathering, promoting teamwork and health while generating vital funds that directly benefit children with disabilities.

Over the course of its 65-year journey, FHO has transformed from a modest care facility into a national leader advocating for the rights of children to live with dignity and access necessary services. Currently recognized as a Centre of Excellence, the organization provides world-class services to over 500 children annually. Noteworthy achievements in the past two years include:

– Investing FJ$80,000 to supply mobility devices for 259 children.
– Allocating FJ$70,000 for hearing aids and support for 226 children.
– Spending FJ$75,000 to deliver therapy services to 627 children in rural areas, including physiotherapy and speech therapy.
– Offering 24/7 residential care for 13 children with high support needs.
– Conducting training for teachers and healthcare professionals to enhance support and services at various community levels.

These accomplishments are facilitated through the generosity of donors, sponsors, and partners who are committed to creating a more inclusive Fiji, advocating for all children to receive the support they deserve.

Sureni Perera, CEO of FHO, emphasizes the organization’s focus on expanding its services and developing impactful programs. She expresses optimism about fostering a more inclusive society with the continued support from the corporate sector and philanthropists. Through collaborative efforts, FHO aims to build a brighter future for every child, reinforcing the belief that with the right resources and commitment, significant progress in awareness and intervention can be achieved.

This hopeful outlook on early intervention not only reflects the resilience of FHO but also the growing recognition of the importance of providing support to vulnerable children in Fiji. As community awareness continues to rise, there is potential for even greater change and improvement in the quality of life for children with disabilities in the region.
