Racial Abuse in Football: Justice Served for Vinicius Jr.

A fan who directed racial abuse at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze during matches in Mallorca last year has been convicted and issued a suspended prison sentence, as announced by Real Madrid on Thursday.

The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed in the La Liga club’s statement, received a 12-month sentence that was suspended after he expressed remorse in a letter to Vinicius and completed anti-discrimination training. Additionally, he has been prohibited from attending any matches for three years.

“This marks the third legal conviction related to racist insults aimed at Real Madrid players in recent months,” the club stated. “Real Madrid will continue its efforts to uphold the club’s values and eliminate racism in football and sports.”

The incidents targeting Vinicius and Chukwueze occurred at Son Moix stadium in Palma, Mallorca, just two weeks apart. During the match between Mallorca and Real Madrid, supporters were recorded making monkey noises at the Brazilian player, who has been outspoken against racism in Spanish football.

Separately, a minor who racially insulted Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in April of this year has also expressed remorse. This youth has been banned from stadiums for one year, will participate in educational programs suggested by the prosecutor’s office, and will be required to pay a fine.
