Several former senior police officers, as well as some current officers, have expressed their interest in the position of Police Commissioner. Notable figures in this group include former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, former Police Chief of Operations Abdul Khan, and Assistant Commissioner of Police for Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Sakeo Ganivatu.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the Constitutional Offices Commission, announced that the application period would close on September 30. He stated, “I cannot release anything yet; applications are open, and we invite interested applicants to apply for the position.”

Other candidates being considered for the role include former police officers Luke Navela, Unaisi Vuniwaqa, who serves as Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security, and Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. Khan mentioned he is contemplating applying, while Tudravu noted that he has not yet submitted an application but intends to consider the deadline of September 30.

Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua previously emphasized the importance of appointing a permanent Police Commissioner swiftly, given the ongoing national drug crisis. He has expressed a preference for appointing a qualified local candidate rather than someone from outside the country.

In the job advertisement, Constitutional Offices Commission Secretary Ropate Green highlighted that the new appointee must be aware of public perceptions of the police force. He emphasized the need for the individual to work towards making sure that the Police is seen as an accountable, transparent, and corruption-free organization. The application deadline is set for the end of the month, specifically no later than 4 PM.
