The process to appoint a new Commissioner of Police in Fiji is currently underway. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), announced that a selection committee has been established to evaluate the 29 applications for the position. The COC plans to reconvene on December 16 to assess the shortlisted candidates.
Rabuka stated, “We have selected the selection panel,” and noted that the COC holds its regular meetings on the third Thursday of each month.
According to Section 129(4) of the Constitution, the President appoints the Commissioner of Police based on the advice from the COC, in consultation with the minister responsible for the Fiji Police Force. Previous reports indicated that notable figures such as former Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, current acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and UN assistant secretary general Unaisi Vuniwaqa have expressed their interest in the role.
Furthermore, Major General Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, emphasized the urgent need to expedite the appointment of the new Commissioner. He stated that this is crucial for ensuring continuity, coherence, and morale within the Fiji Police Force.
This process marks an important step in strengthening the leadership of the Fiji Police Force, ensuring that it is guided by experienced and capable individuals while maintaining stability within the organization.
