Several former senior police officials, some of whom are still active in the force, have expressed their desire to compete for the position of Police Commissioner. Among those interested are former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, former Chief of Operations Abdul Khan, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Sakeo Ganivatu.
Prime Minister and Chair of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), Sitiveni Rabuka, announced that the application period will close on September 30. “I cannot disclose any details at this time, but we encourage interested candidates to submit their applications,” said Mr. Rabuka.
Other potential candidates for the role include former senior police officers Luke Navela, Unaisi Vuniwaqa, who serves as Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security, and Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew.
Abdul Khan mentioned that while he has not yet applied, he is considering submitting an application. Rusiate Tudravu also stated, “I haven’t applied yet. I’m currently in the village and will decide soon since the deadline is September 30.” He had previously indicated intentions to apply.
Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the need for a substantive Commissioner of Police to be appointed promptly, particularly due to the national drug crisis. He expressed a preference for a qualified local candidate rather than an outsider.
In the official advertisement, Ropate Green, the COC Secretary, noted that the selected individual should be aware of the public perception of the police force. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the police are viewed as an accountable, transparent, and trustworthy organization.
The application deadline is set for the end of the month, with submissions accepted until 4 p.m.
