Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has outlined a significant focus for 2025 on tackling poverty and enhancing social protection programs aimed at supporting the most disadvantaged populations in Fiji. In his New Year’s message, he emphasized his commitment to lifting marginalized communities out of poverty through an initiative called the “Targeted Poverty Alleviation Programme of One Village at a Time.”
Rabuka acknowledged that achieving these goals will not be an overnight effort, but he is inspired by other countries that have successfully implemented similar strategies. His vision is for every Fijian to have access to a stable livelihood, whether through employment or entrepreneurship.
He stressed the importance of providing every citizen with a life of dignity and stated, “It is time to stop giving hand-outs, and it is time to work on lifting our people out of the cycle of poverty and reliance.” The approach will require innovative solutions and investment and will need the collective effort of the entire nation, starting with one village at a time.
This initiative represents a hopeful and proactive step towards addressing poverty in Fiji, with a focus on sustainable development rather than temporary assistance. By prioritizing empowerment and self-sufficiency, the Prime Minister aims to foster a culture of resilience and growth, leading to a more equitable society for all Fijians.
