Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently engaged in a two-day visit to Fiji’s Northern Division, focusing on the assessment of proposed upgrades to the road systems as part of the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant initiative is made possible by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The project is expected to have a total budget of approximately FJD $300 million, marking it as a pivotal development effort under the BRI in Fiji.

During the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the necessity of incorporating local perspectives into the project to ensure that the road improvements not only facilitate better connectivity but also create job opportunities within the community during the construction phase.

Among the key areas inspected were 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and 35 kilometers of road stretching from Nabalebale to Dogoru on the Wailevu West Coast. Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, was present to offer insights regarding the technical and logistical elements of the project.

The delegation also participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau, which provided an overview of the economic potential linked to the development of improved road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his contentment with the project, underscoring its importance in enhancing infrastructure and fostering regional economic growth. He noted that the revamped roads are anticipated to invigorate vital sectors such as tourism and renewable energy, especially hydropower, while also improving access and connectivity for rural communities.

This project holds great promise for Fiji, as it is set to not only enhance transportation networks but also stimulate local economies through job creation and improved access to resources. With the emphasis on local involvement and sustainable development, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project could significantly influence the region’s socio-economic landscape in a positive manner.
