Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently in the Northern Division for a two-day visit to evaluate the proposed upgrades to roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant project is financed through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With a budget estimated at FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is poised to become an essential component of the BRI in Fiji.

During his visit, Rabuka emphasized the necessity of involving local communities in the planning process to ensure not only improved connectivity but also the creation of job opportunities throughout the construction phase.

Key areas inspected included 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road stretching from Bua to Nasolo, as well as 35 kilometers from Nabalebale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast Road. Fiji Roads Manager North Delana Rabalaka participated in the tour, sharing technical and logistical insights about the project.

The delegation also engaged in a briefing led by Provincial Administrator for Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, which highlighted the region’s economic potential that stands to gain significantly from enhanced road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting its pivotal role in improving infrastructure and fostering regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads are expected to significantly benefit critical sectors such as tourism and renewable energy, including hydropower, while also improving access for rural communities.

This undertaking holds promising prospects not only for the enhancement of Fiji’s infrastructure but also for the socio-economic upliftment of its communities. The project exemplifies how international partnerships can lead to the betterment of local economies and the empowerment of communities.
