Rabuka’s Political Future: Will He Lead the People’s Alliance Again?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s agreement. He emphasized his commitment by stating, “I will be available,” and noted that the final decision rests with the party.

Rabuka, an instrumental figure since the establishment of the PAP in 2021, played a significant role in shaping the party’s identity and achieving its close victory in the December 2022 elections. While confident in his contributions, he acknowledged that if the party prefers to move forward without him, he would willingly step aside, highlighting the party’s need for growth.

He reflected on the party’s voter base and suggested that a leadership transition might be challenging due to the loyalty of its supporters. He pointed out that he garnered the highest number of votes for PAP in the last election, a clear indication of his influence within the party, while also recognizing the contributions of other prominent members, such as Lynda Tabuya and Charan Jeath Singh.

As the coalition faces a shift in public perception—from initial enthusiasm to growing disillusionment—Rabuka’s leadership remains pivotal. This year is especially critical for him and the party as they seek to regain public trust and ensure a solid electoral strategy for the next election.

Overall, Mr. Rabuka’s readiness to serve again reflects a dedication to the party’s future and the hopes of his supporters. As Fiji moves forward, the decision of the PAP will play a significant role in shaping the political landscape and addressing the challenges faced by the coalition. With unity and strategic planning, the party can strive to revive its public image and engage voters once more.
