Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s decision. He stated, “I will be available. It depends on the party; if the party wants me to stand, I will.”

Rabuka has been a foundational figure in PAP since its establishment in 2021, playing a significant role in shaping the party’s identity and strategy leading to its narrow victory in the December 2022 general elections. He highlighted his commitment to the party’s future, indicating that he has contributed significantly over the past three years but is also open to stepping aside for new leadership if deemed appropriate by the party.

He acknowledged the challenges ahead, suggesting it may be difficult for someone else to take over the leadership role in the next election, given the party’s current voter base. With Rabuka receiving the highest number of votes for PAP in the last election—77,748—followed by MP Lynda Tabuya with 11,965 votes, he understands the dynamics of support within the coalition.

As the political landscape evolves, Rabuka noted a shift in public perception from initial enthusiasm toward a growing sense of hopelessness regarding the Coalition’s prospects. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic and maintains a sense of devotion to the party, indicating that the ultimate decision rests with the electorate.

Overall, this moment reflects the importance of leadership and adaptability within political parties, underscoring the necessity for effective communication and engagement with voters as Fiji moves closer to the next general elections. The situation invites hope for renewal and constructive dialogue within the PAP as they prepare for the future.
