Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a two-day visit to the Northern Division of Fiji to assess the proposed upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant infrastructure initiative is backed by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), aligned with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With a projected budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is poised to become a vital component of the BRI in Fiji.

During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the necessity of incorporating local perspectives into the construction plans. He stated that it is crucial to ensure that the upgrades not only improve connectivity but also create employment opportunities for local residents during the construction phase.

The tour included inspections of major segments such as 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road, connecting Bua to Nasolo, and 35 kilometers of the Nabalebale to Dogoru road along the Wailevu West Coast. Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the delegation and shared insights into the project’s technical and logistical details.

Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau. This session highlighted the economic growth potential of the region, which is anticipated to benefit substantially from the enhanced road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, noting its importance in bolstering infrastructure and fostering regional development. He remarked that the upgraded roads would likely amplify growth in critical sectors such as tourism and renewable energy, including hydropower, while also improving access for rural communities.

In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project represents a collaborative effort to enhance Fiji’s infrastructure, with a focus on local engagement and economic benefits. This initiative not only aims to improve transportation but also aspires to support wider economic opportunities for the residents of the Northern Division.

This venture underscores the positive impact that international partnerships can have on local infrastructure, paving the way for a more connected and economically robust future for Fiji.
