Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka held a meeting with senior police officers yesterday afternoon, marking the latest step in his familiarization process as the Minister Responsible for Police and Immigration.

This gathering included key figures such as Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, Deputy Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci, and three other senior officials from the Fiji Police Force. The primary focus of the meeting was to gain insights into the current operational and management landscape of the police department.

In response to inquiries from The Fiji Times, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed the importance of these briefings, stating, “It was my ‘familiarisation briefing’ from the Acting Commissioner and his Senior Management/Command team, similar to the one I will have with the Acting Director of Immigration and Senior Staff tomorrow afternoon.” He also mentioned having conducted a similar briefing with the Divisional Police Commander for the Western Division earlier in the week.

Attending alongside him were Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua, Permanent Secretary Mason Smith, and Dr. Raijieli Taga, also a Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister.

This proactive approach by Prime Minister Rabuka suggests a commitment to fostering strong communication and understanding within key government departments, which is essential for effective governance and public safety.

In summary, the meeting highlighted the Prime Minister’s dedication to understanding the operations of the Fiji Police Force as part of his responsibilities, setting a positive tone for future collaborations between government officials and law enforcement agencies. Such initiatives could enhance the efficacy and responsiveness of public safety measures.
