Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s decision to endorse him. He stated, “I will be available. It depends on the party, if the party wants me to stand, I will.”
Rabuka has been instrumental in PAP’s journey since its formation in 2021, playing a key role in shaping its identity and contributing to its narrow electoral victory in December the following year. He emphasized his commitment to the party, indicating that if the committee decides on new leadership or a different direction, he understands, as he has already made significant contributions during his tenure.
He added a thoughtful perspective on leadership transition, recognizing the complexities of voter dynamics, stating, “It would probably be difficult for someone to take over leadership in the next general election,” given the current party numbers today. Still, he remains hopeful about the party’s ability to unite and present a strong front.
Mr. Rabuka garnered the highest number of votes for PAP in the 2022 General Election, with 77,748 votes, followed by MP Lynda Tabuya and Minister Charan Jeath Singh. The coming year is crucial for Mr. Rabuka and his party amid changing public perceptions, which have shifted from optimism to a sense of uncertainty.
This situation presents a vital opportunity for the People’s Alliance Party to reflect and strategize for the future, aiming to regain public confidence and support. The emphasis on collaborative decision-making within the party indicates a willingness to adapt and evolve, which can serve as a foundation for resilience as they approach the coming elections. The adaptability and commitment to the party shown by Mr. Rabuka could be key factors in revitalizing the party’s image.
Summary: Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is ready to lead the People’s Alliance Party in the 2026 election if chosen by the party. He has been a foundational member and emphasizes the importance of collective decision-making as the party faces a shift in public sentiment. Despite challenges in leadership and voter dynamics, there’s hope for unity and re-strategizing towards the future.
