Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to present himself before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, emphasizing his commitment to honesty and transparency. In a recent interview, he affirmed, “I will swear to say everything the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” highlighting a pledge to recount his experiences and actions candidly.

When asked about the trustworthiness of his narrative, Rabuka challenged skeptics, stating, “How do you know that what you think is the truth and what I say is not the truth? Hear me out and make your own opinion.” This underscores his desire for open dialogue and individual interpretation.

Rabuka views his testimony as not only a chance to share his perspective but also as a step towards personal peace. “I want to continue to live with a clear conscience,” he stated, expressing a wish for understanding among those who have criticized him. He mentioned the toll that blame has taken on his family and community, asserting, “Too many people blame me, and my family is suffering.” He added that he hopes to foster forgiveness and understanding, saying, “I want people to know… at least they understand why I did it, but it’s still wrong.”

He concluded by noting the significance of facing the collective truth of the nation, sharing, “It’s not just about my truth, it’s about the truth we all need to face as a nation.”

This commitment from the Prime Minister serves as a vital moment in Fiji’s ongoing journey toward reconciliation, fostering hope that open dialogues will pave the way for healing and understanding within the nation.
